Margaritis Schinas, the candidate for Protecting the European Way of Life
Margaritis Schinas is the Greek Vice-President-designate for the “Protecting our European Way of Life” portfolio. He has been serving in the European Commission since 1990, with a two-year interruption, between 2007 and 2009, when he was a Member of the European Parliament for the Greek centre-right New Democracy Party. He was also the European Commission’s Chief Spokesperson over the last five years. According to the President-elect of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen’s mission letter, Schinas’ priorities will be migration, security, social rights, education, youth and culture. In particular, he will have to coordinate the EC’s work on a New Pact on Migration and Asylum, focusing on improving the integration of migrants and refugees into European society. Von der Leyen also asked for the creation of pathways “to legal migration to help us bring in people with the skills and talents our economy and labour market need”. Schinas’ portfolio’s name has triggered a heated debate and attracted much criticism, including from MEPs, who claim this portfolio is an unacceptable concession to the populists’ rhetoric.
