Macron invites Iranian FM Zarif to the G7 in Biarritz
French President Emmanuel Macron invited the Foreign Minister of Iran, Mohammad Javad Zarif, to attend side-line talks during the 45th meeting of the G7. Apart from Macron, FM Zarif also met with British and German officials and his visit put the Iranian issue at the centre of the gathering. Analysts were surprised by this visit, considering that Iranian FM himself is under US sanctions, but the US President Donald Trump reassured the press by saying that he knew about the visit in advance. He added that there is a possibility for a meeting between him and the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who announced on the contrary that Iran will not talk to the US until all sanctions are lifted. The Libyan crisis was also on the agenda, pushed by the presence of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, who was invited as chairman of the African Union. In a final declaration, the G7 countries called for a “well-prepared international conference to bring together all the stakeholders and regional actors relevant to this conflict” and endorsed the work of the United Nations and the African Union in Libya.
