Libya closes three migrants’ detention centres
On 5 August, the Libyan Minister of Interior Fathi Bashagha announced that the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord decided to close three migrants’ detention centres. The three detention centres were based in the coastal cities of Misrata, Khoms and Tajoura, near Tripoli. Last June, 52 people died in Tajoura’s detention centre after an airstrike carried out by General Khalifa Haftar’s forces. In the previous weeks, the UNHCR had called for an organized release of migrants due to squalid conditions and inadequate food supplies of the centres. UNHCR spokesman Anré Mahicic welcomed the decision and declared that the commission is ready to provide assistance to the released migrants.
