Lebanon starts demolishing Syrian refugees’ camps
On 1 July, the Lebanese army demolished several Syrian refugees’ shelters near the northern village of Arsal. In April the Lebanese Higher Defence Council decided to give an ultimatum to Syrian refugees in order to take down their “houses”. Several NGOs and Human Rights organizations denounced that the Lebanese government did not provide refugees with an alternative housing and about 15,000 people (including 9,000 children) could become homeless. A joint statement published by seven aid groups, such as Save the Children, the Norwegian Refugee Council and Oxfam, denounced that what happened was “a traumatising event witnessed by families who had already lost everything”. In the last months, Lebanese authorities are pressing Syrian refugees to go back to their country assisting them with huge convoys.
