Lebanese PM Saad Hariri resigns in a context of tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia
The resignation of Lebanese Prime Minister, Saad Hariri, induced a peak in tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran. After he quitted, Hariri assured that he made his decision because there was a conjuring by Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah to kill him. Saudi Arabia has supported these declarations and has accused Iran of destabilising the “Arab World.” For their part, the Hezbollah and Iran have denied those statements. Iran sees a manoeuvre of Saudi Arabia to create tensions in Lebanon and the region. Lebanese Justice Minister Salim Jreissati said that stability was “a red line”. His resignation brought down the coalition government and sparked a new political crisis, and has thrust Lebanon into the front line of the regional rivalry between Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shi‘a Iran that has also buffeted Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Bahrain. The situation has also worried the UN, whose spokesperson expressed the hope that “all sides will focus on supporting the continuity of Lebanon’s State institutions.”
