Knesset votes to dissolve itself and leads Israel to new elections
On 29 May, the Israeli Parliament voted for the first time to dissolve itself (74 votes out of 120). The new election is scheduled on 17 September. The bill passed after that the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to reach a governing coalition. The main obstacle to form a leading coalition was the friction between the right wing party Yisrael Beiteinu, led by Avigdor Lieberman, and the ultra-orthodox party United Torah Judaism. Lieberman tried to impose the condition to extend military service to ultra-orthodox men, provoking the rejection of United Torah Judaism. On 27 May, US President Trump endorsed Netanyahu‘s attempts to form a coalition: “Hoping things will work out with Israel’s coalition formation and Bibi and I can continue to make the alliance between America and Israel stronger than ever” Trump declared on twitter.
