Kaïs Saied, the conservative jurist
Kaïs Saied, 61-years-old, born in Béni Khiar, a coastal city near Hammamet, is a Tunisian academic expert in constitutional law. He studied in the Political Sciences and Law Faculty of Tunis, where he served as a Professor of Constitutional Law until he retired in 2018. After the Tunisian revolution of 2011, he was a member of the experts’ committee in charge of revising the Constitution. He is famous among Tunisians for his use of classical Arabic, his integrity and his sobriety. Over the last weeks, he did not have a structured electoral team, he decided not to take part to the majority of media events and preferred a door-to-door campaign. He is considered a conservative, especially because of his traditional positions on issues such as equal heritage, homosexuality and death penalty. The main proposal of his electoral agenda is a radical change of the political system, that would give more space to local representation in the institutional structure of Tunisia. Saied presents himself as independent, a guarantor of the constitution, and a radical break with the current political elite.
