Kais Saied and Nabil Karoui pass to the second round of the Tunisian presidential elections
On 17 September, the Tunisian Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) published the official results of the Tunisian presidential elections, held on 15 September. The independent candidate Kais Saied was the most voted one (18.4%), followed by Nabil Karoui (15.6%) and Abdelfattah Mourou (12.9%). The second round will take place by mid-October and will see the confrontation between the non-partisan law professor Saied and the media mogul Nabil Karoui, currently under arrest for money laundering and tax evasion charges. The elections’ results were largely analyzed as a sign of Tunisians’ clear rejection to the ruling establishment, considering that no prominent figures affiliated to governmental parties passed to the second round. According to ISIE, only 42% of the registered voters went to the ballot boxes, another evidence of the people’s disaffection with the ruling elite. Saied, a candidate that run an unconventional, sober and door-to-door electoral campaign, commented the results stating that “Tunisians have written a new and brilliant page in the history of Tunisia”. On 19 September, a Tunisian court rejected the request to release Nabil Karoui by arguing that it was outside its remit, but the TV magnate will be able to run for the presidency anyway.
