Kaid Saied wins Tunisian presidential elections
Kaid Saied won the Tunisian presidential election held on 13 October, with a large majority over the other candidate, Nabil Karoui. The Tunisian High Authority for Elections (ISIE) published the preliminary official results on 14 October. Nabil Karoui, recently freed from prison, published a statement of congratulations to his opponent on 14 October. According to the ISIE, the turnout of this second round rose to 55%, 13 percentage points higher than in the first round. While European institutions have not yet officially reacted to the results of the second round, the French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated Saied on 14 October for the electoral victory welcoming the democratic mobilization of Tunisians. Saied, known for expertise on constitutional matters, for his conservative ideas and for his commitment to local democracy, will have to lead the country in a critical moment characterized by a difficult economic and social situation and an uncertain political situation, as illustrated by the results of the recently-held legislative elections that will materialize in a fragmented parliament.
