Kadri Simson, comissioner in charge of Energy
Kadri Simson is the Estonian Commissioner-designate for Energy. Simson was the Estonian Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure between 2016 and 2019. Her mission letter reads that she will have to focus on guaranteeing access to affordable, secure, reliable and clean Energy for all Europeans through the implementation of the European Green Deal. Some of the aspects of her mission include reducing emissions by 50% before 2030 and developing an integrated, interconnected and properly functioning European energy market. Some measures in this regard are the implementation of energy-efficiency and renewable energy legislation, the promotion of clean energy across the economy, the set-up of the Sustainable Europe Investment Plan, the diversification of sources of supply, the enhancing of nuclear safety in Europe and the continuation of nuclear decommissioning. Energy is an important dimension of Euro-Mediterranean relations: it features among the partnership priorities with countries such as Algeria or Egypt and there are a number of open fronts to foster interconnectivity between the two shores. Besides, recent geopolitical developments around energy in the Eastern Mediterranean are putting energy at the core of the regional dynamics.
