Jordan economy conference takes place in London
On 28 February the UK hosted the “Jordan: Growth and Opportunity” conference in London. British PM Theresa May, HR/VP Mogherini and Jordan King Abdullah II attended the conference. The conference was “about working as partners, sharing skills, experience, and resources to jointly tackle the challenges we [they] face in a way that delivers global security and prosperity” declared Theresa May. Lots of high profile political representations and international donors attended the conference, to coordinate their economic strategy towards Jordan. UK announced programs to equip Jordanian students with English language and business skills, co-working with UNICEF. The UK government also announced that it would underwrite a $250m World Bank loan that would permit Jordan to borrow money at a lower rate. The EU confirmed its intention to continue to invest in this “key political partner”, reporting that the last year the Union invested €2bn in Jordan supporting education, security, Syrian refugees, border management, reforms, and counterterrorism. King Abdullah II also met Queen Elisabeth II and UK’s Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa Alister Burt.
