Israeli PM hands over his role as Foreign Minister
On 17 February, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he would give up his role as Foreign Minister, held since 2015. Netanyahu continues to hold the portfolios of Health and Defence. The new Israeli Foreign Minister will be the Intelligence Minister Israel Katz. Katz, 63 years old, is also Transport Minister and he is part of Netanyahu’s right-wing party Likud. The advocacy group “Movement for Quality Government” had argued that “Netanyahu’s workload was untenable and further harmed a foreign ministry beset by budget disputes”. On Twitter, Katz declared “Together with the prime minister we will continue to lead the State of Israel’s foreign policy to new achievements”. He will hold the Foreign Ministry until upcoming parliamentary elections on 9 April.
