Israeli army attacks Hamas targets in Gaza as retaliation for rocket launches
Israeli aircraft has attacked the Gaza Strip after three rockets were fired from the enclave towards southern Israel. The attacks have targeted two sites belonging to the Qassam Brigades and no casualties have been reported. While no armed group has claimed responsibility for the rocket fire, the Israeli army states that “Hamas is responsible for any attack transpiring and emanating from the Gaza Strip”. Previously on 27 November, Israel had attacked several sites linked to the Qassam Brigades and the Islamic Jihad, breaking thereby the ceasefire established on 14 November. Thousands of Palestinians have resumed the protests along the fence with Israel after they decided to suspend them three weeks ago. At least 14 Palestinians taking part of 6 December ‘March of Return’ protest were wounded by Israeli fire, four of them with live gunshots, according to Gaza’s health ministry. Tension is rising after Israeli government announced on 1 December its plans for building a new illegal settlement in the heart of the flashpoint city of Hebron. On 30 November, Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian teenager southwest of Hebron, accusing him of throwing petrol bombs at a military vehicle. Hebron Mayor Taysir Abu Sneineh warned that this decision will lead to escalations in the entire region. In her last speech as HR/VP Federica Mogherini endorsed again the two-state solution as the only valid to solve the conflict and expressed again the EU’s opposition to illegal settlements.
