Iraq supports Syria’s return to the Arab League
On 30 January, Iraqi foreign minister Mohamed Al-Hakim officially declared the position of his country in favour of the reintegration of Syria in the organisation of the Arab League, on the occasion of a bilateral visit in Moscow. Russia is working towards facilitating the normalization of relations between Syria and other Arab countries. On 26 January, in the context of Minister Lavrov’s visit to Tunisia, President Essebsi declared that Syrian reacceptance to Arab League (AL) needs “a decision by consensus from the Arab group”. On 8 January, Lebanon diplomats mentioned a tripartite proposal (Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan) aimed to Syria’s reintegration. On 27 December, UAE decided to move back its embassy to Damascus and recently Bahrain declared the same intention. Syria has been suspended from the AL in November 2011 and the summit in March seems to be crucial for the normalisation of relations.
