Iranian FM Zarif visits Damascus and Ankara
On 16 and 17 April, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran, Javad Zarif, visited Damascus and Ankara where he met the Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan respectively. During his visit in Damascus, the two delegations expressed their contrariety with Trump’s policies in the region, in particular referring to the US decision over Golan Heights and the US’ recognition of Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist group. They also discussed about bilateral cooperation and expressed the importance that their countries give to Astana Process. The day after his visit in Damascus, Minister Zarif visited Ankara where he met president Erdogan and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu. Two of the issues on the agenda were the previous visit to Assad and the situation in Syria: “In Syria, from the start, on the ground, we do not agree with Iran on many issues but we have decided to cooperate with Iran for a political solution.” said Turkish FM on Wednesday. The two delegations also spoke about the US’ policy in Iran, referring to that Mr. Cavusoglu declared that Turkey “will continue telling the U.S. that the embargoes [on Iran] are wrong”.
