IOM: Migrant arrivals reach 18,364 and deaths reach 508 in 2019
A new report by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) shows that 18,364 migrants and refugees have entered Europe through the Mediterranean since the start of 2019. This corresponds to a 30% decrease from the number of arrivals during the same period in 2018. Arrivals to Spain and Italy account for 87% of the total, and arrivals to Spain are higher at this point in the year than they were a year ago, although Spain’s rate of arrival for 2019 has decreased since February, from just over 85 persons per day during the first two months of 2019 to under 40 per day in April and May. The report also finds that 508 people have died using the three main Mediterranean Sea routes since the beginning of 2019. During the same period in 2018, 638 had died.
