International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists: 1010 journalists killed between 2006-2017
On the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, and in the context of growing tension raised by the Khashoggi case, HR/VP Federica Mogherini stated in an official statement: “Free journalism is the backbone of free societies: undermining it means undermining our own freedom.” According to the just released report by the UNESCO Observatory of killed journalists, 1010 journalists have been killed between 2006 and 2017, and only 1 out of 9 cases of killed journalists have been resolved. The study points that Arab states are those where the highest numbers of killings in 2016-2017 were recorded (32 journalists in 2016 and 18 in 2017 were killed in the region), together with Asia and the Pacific, and followed by Latin America and the Caribbean. Mogherini stressed that no region was free from these violations, and expressed that the EU would continue to fund the European Centre for Press and Media freedom (ECPMF) to enhance the quality of journalism.
