HRVP Mogherini meets with UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy H.E. Horst Köhler
High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini met with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy H.E. Horst Köhler in Brussels on 9 January to discuss the relaunch of the UN peace process for Western Sahara.
On 28 April 2017, the UN Security Council unanimously approved Resolution 2351 on the Situation concerning Western Sahara. This Resolution extends the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) until 30 April 2018, and calls on the parties to the Western Sahara conflict to resume negotiations under the auspices of the Secretary-General.
In the meeting, Mogherini reiterated EU’s support to the UN relaunching of the West Sahara peace process, “with the aim of achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution for all the parties involved that provides for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara”.
