HR/VP Mogherini visits Lebanon
On 25 – 26 February, HR/VP Federica Mogherini visited Beirut making it the first high-level visit since the new Government was formed on 31 January 2019. She met with President of the Republic Michel Aoun, with the Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Major General Stefano Del Col, and the leader of the Progressive Socialist Party Walid Jumblatt. She officially inaugurated with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri the new premises of the EU Delegation in Lebanon. “The visit underlined the EU’s strong commitment to Lebanon’s stability and a partnership based on common values and shared interests”, the EEAS press release reads. HR/VP Mogherini expressed the EU’s commitment to continue accompanying Lebanon in implementing its reforms and supporting the hosting of refugees. In her statement, she also said that the EU continues to support UNIFIL in its role in maintaining stability at the southern border. The visit took place after the first EU-LAS Summit in Egypt and two weeks ahead of the Brussels III Conference on “Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region” in March.
