HR/VP Mogherini on the UN Global Compact for Migration
At the plenary session of the European Parliament on the preparation of the upcoming Marrakech Intergovernmental Conference to be held on 10-11 December on the UN Global Compact for Migration, to which many countries like Italy, Austria and Hungary said will not take part, HR/VP Federica Mogherini made a speech where, in a critical position regarding these decisions, said: “we regret the decision by some European Union Member States not to join or to support the Global Compact [for Safe, Orderly and regular Migration]”. She then added that it is a “mistake to tackle migration as a fight between the North and the South of the world, the developed and the developing countries.” She stated the migration has to be tackled with multilateral lenses as it is a global challenge, and for that, the global Compact serves as the framework to serves both regional and national interests. Mogherini later recalled on her speech that after the conference in Marrakesh there will be a vote in the UN General Assembly, where Member States of the United Nations will take a vote.
