Houthi rebels attack two major oil facilities in Saudi Arabia
On 14 September, the Saudi oil facilities of Abqaiq and Khurais were targeted by drones, halving Saudi Aramco’s production. Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed responsibility showing some videos of the attack, but according to Saudi FM Ibrahim Abdulaziz Al-Assaf “investigations are still ongoing to determine the source of the attack”. On 16 September, Riyadh announced that the weapons used in the attack were of Iranian origin, which has prompted the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to blame Teheran for the airstrikes. Iran denied its involvement and ruled out any possible high level meeting with the US regarding tensions in the Gulf and the future of the JCPOA. Several international actors condemned the attack, and US President Donald Trump stated that the US “are waiting to hear from the Kingdom [of Saudi Arabia] as to who they believe was the cause of this attack and under what terms we would proceed!” The targeted facilities produce approximately 5% of the world oil supply, which has led to the biggest surge in oil prices since the invasion of Kuwait, with the Brent rising by nearly 20%.
