Haftar’s forces target Mitiga and Misurata international airports
On 2 and 5 October, the Libyan international airports of Mitiga (Tripoli) and Misrata were targeted. This resulted in the temporary suspension of their activities and triggered a reaction from the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). The UN- recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) accused Genral Khalia Haftar’s forces to be responsible for the attack, and pointed the direct involvement of the United Arab Emirates in the Mitiga’s airstrike. UNSMIL strongly condemned the targeting of civilian infrastructures stating that they “constitute blatant violation of International Humanitarian law”. On 6 October the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it filed a “formal protest to the UN Security Council against the Haftar militias”. On 2 October, during an official visit in Italy, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared that the ceasefire in Libya is a priority for Washington. Clashes between the two sides have been continuing since April, when Haftar started his offensive over Tripoli. According to the World Health Organization, more than 1.000 people died and about 5.500 got injured since the beginning of the offensive.
