Haftar announces final assault on Tripoli
Libya National Army (LNA) General Khalifa Haftar has announced “a decisive battle” to capture Tripoli, which he has been attempting for eight months without success. In a televised address, Haftar called upon “heroes” to advance towards the capital. The UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) has said that the situation is controlled and they are holding their positions in the south of the city, preparing for “any new insane attempt” by Haftar. The LNA launched an offensive in April to capture Tripoli, taking control of most of the country’s oil installations, but since then the operation stalemated. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1,000 have been killed and 120,000 have been displaced since the beginning of the offensive. LNA attacks have resulted in many civilian casualties, including the bombing of migrant detention centres. Both sides in the conflict have received military support from neighbouring countries, violating a UN’s arms embargo on Libya in force since 2011. A recent report published by the UN confirms that multiple armed groups from Sudan and Chad have been involved in the conflict.
