Habib Jemli tasked with forming a new government in Tunisia
Tunisia’s recently elected President Kais Saied has tasked Habib Jemli with forming a new government. Jemli, a 60-year old agricultural engineer, who describes himself as independent, was tasked with this mission after Ennahda nominated him for the post. He served as a junior minister in the first Ennahda-led government in late 2011. According to al-Jazeera, Jemli has stated that “cabinet members will be chosen based on their competence and integrity and not on their political affiliation”. The nominated prime minister has two months to set up a coalition which will be an arduous task due to the fragmentation of the Tunisian Parliament. If Jemli fails, Saied will nominate another candidate. If this attempt would not be successful as well, new elections will take place.
