Greece recognizes Turkey’s energy rights in the Eastern Mediterranean
On 21 March, Greek FM Giorgos Katrougalos and his Turkish counterpart FM Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu met in the coastal city of Antalya. In this meeting, Greece recognized Turkey’s rights concerning the energy resources in the eastern Mediterranean. During the joint press conference, both PMs said they were working to reduce tensions in the region. They discussed a range of issues, including divided Cyprus. Katrougalos said that Greece is assessing if it is possible to resume settlement negotiations on the Cyprus problem between all parties. “We want the negotiations to begin. But they should be negotiations that have a chance of reaching an agreement, and not just for the sake of negotiating. We are committed to this because we want a solution for the Cyprus issue,” he said. Turkey’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister, Fatih Donmez, disapproved of this by saying that the Greek Cypriot side’s attempt to acquire all of the island’s natural resources for its own economy was wrong. He expressed that “the Turkish Cypriots have their own rights and interests which must be protected” and that the Greek Cypriot side should be focusing on a win-win model for both sides.
