Germany will host an International Conference on Libya
On 11 September, German Ambassador to Libya Oliver Owcza said that Germany aims to host, together with the UN, an international conference to stabilize the North African country. Owcza announced on Twitter that Berlin has “initiated a consultation process with key international partners. With sufficient preparatory work these efforts could lead towards a meaningful international event this fall”. The announcement came after Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya Ghassan Salamé announced the possibility of holding an International Conference on the Libyan Crisis. The Press Agency Anadolu reported that Salamé discussed this issue with the Canadian and British Ambassadors in Libya. Also during last week’s G7 meeting, world leaders called for an International Conference to tackle the situation in the country. On 12 September, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed her concern over the Libyan conflict in front of the Bundestag.
