French President Emmanuel Macron visits Egypt
On 27-29 January, the French President Emmanuel Macron joined Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi for the Egyptian-French summit talks at the Ittihadiya presidential palace. On 28 January, both presidents signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in several sectors. One of them targets the establishment of a strategic partnership for social and economic development between Egypt and the French Development Agency (AFD) from 2019 till 2023. They both participated to the Egyptian-French Economic Forum, where they signed agreements, they discussed economic reforms in Egypt and promoted increasing joint economic and trade relations. On 29 January, President Macron met with Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria and Imam Ahmed el-Tayeb. President Macron messaged to President Sisi, in a joint press conference, that France’s “commitment to security cannot be considered separately from the issue of human rights.”
