First official reactions to Algerian protests
On 6 and 7 March, the EU expressed its support to Algerian people’s right to protest. In Brussels the spokesman of the European External Action Service, Maja Kocijancic, during a press briefing declared that “When we talk about demonstrations, the rights to freedom of expression and assembly are enshrined in the Algerian Constitution” and she added that the EU is expecting for these constitutional rights “to be exercised peacefully and guaranteed in accordance with the rule of law”. On 6 March, French PM Edouard Philippe declared that Algeria is a sovereign country and it is up to Algerian people to choose for their political future. On the other side of the Atlantic, Robert Palladino, the State Department’s Deputy Spokesman, also declared that the US “supports the Algerian people and their right to peacefully assemble”. The 81-year-old Algerian president made his return on March 10 to the city’s capital Algiers although his health conditions are getting worse, as reported by the Swiss hospital.
