European Parliament special committee on terrorism calls for closer EU cooperation
The Special Committee on Terrorism (TERR) is tasked to examine, analyse and assess, based on facts provided by law enforcement authorities, competent EU agencies and experts, the extent of the terrorist threat on European soil. This committee adopted on 15 November its final report, which includes a comprehensive set of measures that the EU should take as soon as possible to ameliorate its response to this threat. The report puts forward new actions to prevent radicalisation, prevent terrorism financing, reinforce judicial cooperation among member states, exchange information and protect external borders, and finally, address the issue of the rights of the victims of terrorism and how they can be supported. The Special Committee concludes that “Europol should become a true “hub” for information exchange and cooperation in the field of counter-terrorism at EU level, if necessary with a stronger mandate.”
