European Commission welcomes agreement to modernise EU visa rules
Representatives of the European Parliament and the Romanian Presidency of the Council have endorsed the Commission’s proposal from March 2018 to modernise the EU’s common visa policy. Amending the EU’s visa code, which entered into force in 2010, will permit to update visa rules with the goal to improve conditions for legitimate travellers and to expand the existing tools to address illegal migration. The new conditions will allow for more flexible procedures, such as permitting the lodging of applications up to 6 months and providing to fill and sign procedures electronically. As part of the reform of the common EU visa policy, negotiations regarding the Commission’s proposal from May 2018 to upgrade the Visa Information System are taking place. This system’s database stores the information of persons applying for Schengen visas, and its modernisation will contribute to making the EU’s external borders more secure.
