European Commission report on the state of EU-Jordan partnership
Ahead of EU-Jordan Association Committee, the European Commission has released a retrospective report on the EU-Jordan partnership for the period May 2017 to May 2018, in which the EU recognises Jordan’s enhancements in the economic, political and social fields, as well as progress made in bilateral cooperation between the two parts. As an overview of the situation, the report starts: “Jordan has remained politically and socially stable in the face of persistent economic, social and security challenges. The economic situation is not improving, however, and the presence of refugees continues to put pressure on the country’s scarce resources.” It highlights efforts and developments undertaken within the framework of the Partnership Priorities adopted in 2016, and revised in 2017, for the 2016-2018 period, that are: Strengthening cooperation on regional stability and security, including counter-terrorism; promoting economic stability, sustainable and knowledge-based growth, quality education and job creation; and strengthening democratic governance, the rule of law and human rights. As EU financial support to Jordan since 2011 has surpassed €2 billion, including almost €800 million for bilateral cooperation assistance and €1.2 billion of additional assistance to help the country with the consequences of the Syrian crisis, Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn said: “I can confirm that the EU will keep working with Jordan to strengthen its resilience by creating opportunities, promoting entrepreneurship, to generate economic growth and attracting foreign investors.” He also recognised Jordan’s effort to host so many Syrian refugees, and stressed: “our support will continue.”
