EU proposes €500 million financial assistance to Jordan

On 9 September, the European Commission decided to propose a new Macro-Financial Assistance (MFA) programme of €500 million for Jordan that will have to be approved by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. The MFA’s programme aims to provide support to Amman’s future economic reforms, promoting jobs, growth and investment. Since 2011, the EU has already adopted other two MFAs to help Jordanian economy, with a total amount of €380 million. According to a report published in July, the first MFA programme was “relevant to Jordan’s economic challenges and in line with the EU’s priorities”. MFA funds will be made available through low-interest and long-term loans and its implementation will be agreed in a Memorandum of Understanding between the two parts. The EU Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs Pierre Moscovici commented the proposal declaring that “today’s proposal demonstrates the EU’s sustained commitment to supporting Jordan in what remain challenging times. Jordan has made significant strides in its reform process; but addressing economic difficulties requires continued action”.
