EU-League of Arab States Summit
On 24-25 February, heads of state and government of the EU and of the the League of Arab States (LAS) met in Sharm El Cheikh. On the EU side, President of the European Council Donald Tusk, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, HR/VP Mogherini and Commissioner Hahn also attended the EU-LAS Summit in Egypt. A joint Declaration was adopted as a result, reaffirming further cooperation towards migration, security, conflict-resolution and socio-economic and sustainable development and cooperation. In its opening remarks, Tusk stressed the need for further cooperation, including in solving regional crises. Both parties sought common ground on security threats including Yemen, Syria and Libya and the common work on the two state solution. They also discussed climate change, terrorism and migration. Reminding that the global order was “under threat”, Tusk declared that “both sides will work together to defend it [the global order]” and that “multilateral solutions remain the best way to address threats to international peace and security.” While the declaration includes a joint commitment to the “the upholding of all aspects of international human rights law”, Al-Sisi did warn European countries to not “impose their views” on human rights, and argued that while “the priority of Europeans is well-being, that of the Arab states is to keep safe from collapse” according to statements published in the online edition of the newspaper Al Ahram. “Our disagreements on human rights should not prevent us from facing the future with optimism,” stressed the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, quoted by France Presse, in a final appearance. Considered a success by both sides, the two-day summit is expected to boost cooperation on shared strategic priorities. A second summit is due to take place in Brussels in 2022.
