Egyptian economist Abdel Khalik Farouk arrested over critical book
On Sunday 21 October, Egyptian police arrested Abdel Khalik Farouk, an Egyptian economist that had just published his new book entitled Is Egypt really a poor country?, in which he critically analyses the country’s economic and social crisis. His wife stated that three policemen entered their home and arrested him. The main charges against Farouk still have to be specified, but Farouk’s detention came days after local media reported that copies of his book were seized by authorities from a publisher. This is yet another case reported by Egyptian human rights activists, who, since el-Sisi seized power, have not ceased to criticize and denounce government abuses.
