Egypt, Greece and Cyprus call on Turkey to stop its provocative actions in the Eastern Mediterranean
The Heads of State and Government of Greece, Cyprus and Egypt met in Cairo on 8 October on the occasion of their seventh tripartite summit. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades issued a joint communiqué where they called on Turkey to “end its provocative actions” in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, according to Reuters. The three leaders consider that Turkish explorations in Cyprus’ territorial waters are a “breach of international law”. The summit was preceded by Turkey sending a drilling ship on 3 October to an area where Greek Cypriot authorities have already awarded exploration rights to Italian and French companies. In January this year, Egypt, Greece and Cyprus, together with Israel, Jordan, Italy and the Palestinian Territories launched the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum with the objective to create a regional energy market.
