Egypt: 40 activists detained since late October
According to a newly published Human Rights Watch (HRW) report, Egyptian police and National Security Agency (NSA) forces have arrested at least 40 activists and critics of el- Sisi’s government since late October 2018. Human rights workers, lawyers, and political activists are targeted, and HRW states: “Many of those arrested were people who provided humanitarian and legal support to families of political detainees”. Among those arrested is Hoda Abdel Moneim, a 60-year-old lawyer and former member of the official National Council for Human Rights and supporter of Morsi’s government, and Aisha Khairat al-Shater, a pro-Muslim Brotherhood activist and daughter of a former Muslim Brotherhood leader. These arrests occurred despite el-Sisi’s recent announcement where he stated he might order a review of the 2017 law restricting and criminalizing the work of NGOs.
