EBRD backs the development of high-quality hospitals in Egypt and Morocco
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has recently contributed with $20 million, out of a total investment of $125 million, for the development of high-quality healthcare facilities in Egypt and Morocco. The funds, gathered by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), will be used by the Al Batterjia Medical SAE group to develop greenfield hospitals in Alexandria and Casablanca. Both facilities will be efficient in the use of energy, water and construction materials and will acquire an internationally recognized certification. The project will contribute to the overall improvement of the Egyptian and Moroccan health systems, whose low quality facilities struggle to meet the needs of the countries’ fast-growing populations. In addition, for the first time, the EBRD is providing funds using what is known as a “Commodity Murabaha”. The latter refers to a specific way of providing finance compliant with Islamic Law, which does not accept loans bearing any kind of interest. Since 2012, the EBRD has been active in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia with more than €11billion invested in 255 projects.
