Donald Trump demands EU member states to take over 800 Daesh fighters
On 17 February, Donald Trump has asked the US’ European allies to put to trial the citizens of their respective countries who fought with the Daesh and who have been seized by US forces in Syria and Iraq. Over 800 fighters with European nationalities were captured and unless their countries of origin take charge of them the US would be forced to release them, the president warned. In one of his tweets, he stated that “the US does not want to watch as these ISIS fighters permeate Europe, which is where they are expected to go. We do so much, and spend so much – Time for others to step up and do the job that they are so capable of doing”. Concerns over the US’ decision to withdraw about 2000 troops from Syria are still present among US allies, as such measure would leave the Syrian Democratic Forces vulnerable to a Daesh resurgence.
