Cypriot, Greek and Egyptian heads of state and government gather to discuss energy cooperation and developments in the region
Cypriot President Nicos Ansatasiades, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Egyptian President Abd el Fattah al Sisi gathered in Nicosia for the 5th edition of the annual Egypt-Greece-Cyprus Trilateral Summit. The previous edition of a Summit under this format was held in Cairo in October 2016. The three heads of state and government discussed a range of eastern Mediterranean-related issues, including the geopolitical situation in the region in the context of the war in Syria as well as developments in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The energy question was also on the agenda, as the three leaders held talks on the EastMed pipeline project, due to cross Cyprus and Greece to provide the EU with natural gas from the Levantine field. Hydrocarbon and natural gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean were also discussed. Also on the agenda, the participants agreed to further enhance EU-Egypt relations. The sixth edition of this meeting is due to take place next year and to be hosted by Greece in the island of Crete.
