Construction of 31 settler housing units in Hebron, West Bank
On Sunday 14 October, the Israeli government gave its approval to the construction of 31 housing units and 2 kindergartens for Jewish settlers in Hebron, West Bank, a city where some 800 Jews live among 200,000 Palestinians. The announcement of these new housing units or settlers is even more sensitive as UNESCO inscribed in July 2017 Hebron’s Old City on the list of World Heritage in Danger, a decision that made Israel withdraw from UNESCO. Avigdor Lieberman, Israel’s Defence Minister, announced: “For the first time in more than 20 years, Hebron will have a new Jewish quarter on the current site of a military camp”. Israeli NGO Peace Now, which advocates for a peaceful two-state solution and tries to monitor Israeli settlements, stated that construction in the colonies has risen since US President Donald Trump, great ally of Netanyahu’s government, was elected in early 2017.
