Commissioner Avramopoulos visits Turkey one week ahead of a visit to Greece by President Erdogan
European Commissioner for Migration and Home Affairs, Dimitris Avramopoulos, visited Turkey, where he delivered a speech at the 8th Bosphorus Summit, held in Istanbul by International Cooperation Platform (ICP), a meeting aimed at enhancing relations between institutional actors, business people and finance entities involved in MENA countries’ development. In his speech, Commissioner Avramopoulos addressed developments in the MENA countries regarding ongoing wars and jihadist terrorism, two key issues in Turkey-EU relations that Commissioner Avramopoulos took the opportunity to discuss with Turkish President Erdogan in the margins of the Summit. They took stock of the situation regarding Syrian refugees in Turkey in the framework of the EU-Turkey agreement and EU-Turkey collaboration in the fight against terrorism. Commissioner Avramopoulos commended the upcoming visit by President Erdogan to Greece, to be held on 6 and 7 December. This will be the first official visit by a Turkish head of state or government in 65 years, and was welcomed as a positive move for the EU-Turkey relations.
