Commissioner Avramopoulos meets Egyptian president Al-Sisi in Cairo
On 26 June, the European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos met the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi in Cairo to discuss about new strategies to deal with illegal migration. President Al-Sisi highlighted Egyptian efforts to help migrants, referring to the millions of refugees that Egypt welcomed in the past years. They both agreed on the importance of cooperation in the fight against illegal migration. Commissioner Avramopoulos expressed his appreciation for Egyptian efforts to stop illegal migration and described Egypt as a model for stability and growth in the region. Al-Sisi declared that “the illegal migration phenomenon is complicated and trans-border which calls for bolstering cooperation on both regional and international matters to deal with its challenges”. Commissioner Avramopoulos commented the meeting via Twitter, ensuring that it is in the EU interest to “deepen our cooperation, which will benefit the whole region.”
