Clashes in Al-Aqsa, Jerusalem, between Muslims worshippers and Israeli police
On 1 June, a group of Israeli settlers entered in Al-Aqsa mosque under the protection of the Israeli police, provoking strong protests from the Palestinian side that clashed with the Israeli forces. The Jerusalem Waqf Agency stated that this group of settlers wanted to enter the holy space in order to celebrate what they call the “reunification of Jerusalem” and during the previous weeks they have been calling Jewish groups to converge to the site for the celebrations. The Arab part considered it as a provocation considering that it happened during the last days of Ramadan. “Some 1,179 Jewish extremists stormed the compound in the morning, in a massive violation of the holy month of Ramadan, the settlers broke into the compound through Al-Mugharbah gate under the protection of Israeli police”, the director of Al-Aqsa Mosque, Omar Kiswani declared to Anadolu Agency. The situation in Jerusalem was one of the focal points of the meeting between the king of Jordan Abdullah II and his Moroccan counterpart Mohammed VI on 3 June. The two heads of state stressed the importance of the “historic Hashemite tutelage, assured by Abdullah II, on Islamic and Christian holy sites in Al Quds”.
