Clashes between militias in Southern Libya’s city of Sabha
On 9 February, the eastern Libya forces led by general Haftar has carried out several airstrikes in the southern region of Sabha. The target of the operation was the oil field of El-Feel, one of the largest oil fields in Libya. The Libyan Presidential Council described the airstrikes as “terrorist attacks” and on 10 February the UN mission in Libya urged belligerent parties to avoid civilians and economic facilities as they “belong to all Libyans”. Haftar’s number two, Abdel-Razeq Nathouri, speaking with Reuters, affirmed that their intention is to take the oilfield of Sabha peacefully, in order to ensure security there and to pass the control of regional oil fields to the Tripoli-based National Oil Company (NOC). According to Nathouri’s declaration, NOC is not working in that region as it is considered “unsafe”. On 11 February, the pro-government commander of Sabha military zone, Ali Kanah, affirmed that the oil fields in the region are completely safe and he added that “NOC can lift the status of force majeure on Sharara oil field if it wants”.
