British PM Johnson meets Jordan’s King Abdullah II and holds a phone call with Palestinian President Abbas
On 7 August, the King of Jordan Abdullah II met the recently elected British Prime Minister Boris Johnson during a working visit in London. The two leaders discussed about the strong relations between the two countries and the political situation in the Middle East. PM Johnson welcomed Jordanian efforts to reform the economic system and urged the King to persist in these attempts. After the meeting, a spokesperson of Downing Street declared that “the leaders also acknowledged Jordan’s important role in maintaining regional stability and the PM thanked the King for the part Jordan continues to play in hosting Syrian refugees”. King Abdullah II expressed his appreciation for British support, in particular referring to the London Initiative Conference, a forum that aims to bolster Jordan’s economy. On 8 August, PM Johnson also held a phone call with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, in which both leaders talked about the recent developments in Jerusalem and their bilateral relations. Johnson reiterated that the UK is committed to a two-state solution and condemned Israeli policy of home demolitions. On the other side, Abbas expressed his gratitude to the British government for its support for the UNRWA.
