British government recognizes Hezbollah as a terrorist group
On 26 February the House of Commons of British Parliament approved the government proposal to ban all the branches of Lebanese political movement Hezbollah. Before this decision, the EU, including the UK, was considering only the military branch of the group as a terrorist group. According to British Home Secretary Sajid Javid, the British Government is “no longer able to distinguish between their [Hezbollah] already banned military wing and the political party. Because of this, I have taken the decision to proscribe the group in its entirety”. The shadow Home Office Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds expressed his concern about the fact that “such a ban would interfere with diplomatic relations” as Hezbollah “was part of a democratically elected government”. Gilad Erdan, Javid’s Israeli counterpart, welcomed the British decision on Twitter and called on the EU to follow the British Parliament. According to this new ban, supporting Hezbollah will be considered illegal and it could carry a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
