Arab leaders agree on a 29-item economic agenda after the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit in Beirut

On 19 and 20 January in Beirut the delegations of 20 Arab Countries attended the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit. The leaders agreed on a 29-item economic agenda, proposing an Arab free trade zone and economical supports for countries that are hosting refugees. In particular, the Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League Hossam Zaki invited the Arab countries to “help alleviate the suffering of refugees and displaced and to secure funding for developmental projects in host countries”. Another important issue was the reconstruction of countries affected by conflicts as Syria, Somalia and Yemen. In this regard, Lebanese President Michel Aoun, proposed to establish an Arab bank for reconstruction and development. The Arab countries found themselves divided in front of the proposal to re-introduce Syria in the Arab league, proposal that will be discussed during the Arab summit that will take place in Tunisia in March.
