Algeria calls for activating the Arab Maghreb Union
After Morocco stated it was ready to reinstate direct dialogue with “sister Algeria” and to relaunch bilateral dialogue a couple of weeks ago, Algeria called on 23 November for the convening of a meeting of the Maghreb Union’s Council of Foreign Ministers “as soon as possible”, as it is seeking to activate the Maghreb dialogue, based on already existing institutions, which suffer from paralysis due in part to the Western Sahara issue. As stated by Algerian Foreign Ministry, “The initiative is based on the firm conviction of Algeria, which has expressed on many occasions the need to push the course of the Maghreb and its institutions”. An EU spokeperson, stated: “We note with interest Algeria’s proposal to hold a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Arab Maghreb Union […] any constructive initiative that can contribute to good cooperation in the Maghreb region is welcome”.
