Al-Sisi’s visit to Washington
On 9 April, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met with US President Donald Trump in Washington. Trump commended the good relations the US had with Egypt and the “good work” al-Sisi was doing. Trump made no comment on new amendments to the 2014 Constitution that strengthen the powers of the executive and the army, and enabled the head of state to remain at the helm of the country beyond 2022. Before the meeting, NGOs such as Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Amnesty International had urged the US not to give the go-ahead to this constitutional reform project. Reportedly, Egypt’s decision to withdraw from US’ Middle East Strategic Alliance (MESA) was also discussed.
