Al-Sisi assumes African Union’s chairmanship
On 10 February the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi took over the post of head of the African Union (AU) during the continental body’s summit in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. The Egyptian president Al-Sisi attended the summit and addressed a speech in which he affirmed that he would focus on the security of African continent. He also ensured that “Mediation and preventive diplomacy will remain one of the priorities of the African Union.” Al-Sisi also referred to the fight against terrorism declaring that “counter- terrorism requires the identification of those who support and finance it and combating them collectively. While we are aware of the difficulty and complexity of the struggle, this remains the only appropriate way to uproot terrorism and eradicate it.” The human rights movement Amnesty International launched an alarm warning that Al-Sisi’s mandate might undermine the AU’s human rights mechanism.
